Project Information
The US 41 PD&E study is being conducted in conjunction with Collier County and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and will document information necessary for FDOT to reach a decision on the type, design and location of improvements to US 41. The purpose of the planned improvements to US 41 is to accommodate the expected increase in traffic due to population and employment growth along the corridor and within the project area.
Based on long range planning, projected population and employment growth, and projected traffic volumes, the Collier County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) has made this project a priority in Collier County. The Collier County MPO’s current 2025 Needs Plan shows a need for 6-lanes on US 41 from CR 951 to Greenway Road and 4-lanes from Greenway Road to CR 92.
During preliminary planning for this project through the FDOT’s Efficient Transportation Decision Making (ETDM) screening process, concerns were raised by the US Fish and Wildlife Services (USFWS) regarding the widening of US 41 within the bounds of the Collier-Seminole State Park. As a result of the dispute resolution between FDOT, USFWS, and the Collier County MPO, the segment of US 41 from Six L’s Farm Road to CR 92 will be designated as a “constrained” segment and will remain a 2-lane roadway. The MPO agreed to revise their needs plan to reflect this change.
US 41 is also an important link in the Collier County Emergency Management Department’s Evacuation Network. It provides crucial access to northbound evacuation routes for gulf coast residents in Everglades City, Chokoloskee and Marco Island.
